As
a human inhabitant on this planet, we absolutely carry the responsibility of
doing our part to protect the environment. For every action, there is a
reaction. Just because it isn’t something that affects a person directly in
front of their face doesn’t mean that it isn’t drastically affecting the
environment elsewhere. Every country all over the world faces its own set of
issues.
“Morocco's major environmental
issues include land degradation/desertification (soil erosion resulting from
farming of marginal areas, overgrazing, destruction of vegetation), water supplies
contaminated by raw sewage, siltation of reservoirs; and, oil pollution of
coastal waters.” (Encyclopedia of Earth) There are many different environmental
resources and programs all over the world that specialize in dealing with these
types of issues. One of the most well known environmental assistance programs
in the world is water.org.
“Co-founded by Gary White and Matt
Damon, Water.org is a nonprofit organization that has transformed hundreds of
communities in Africa, South Asia, and Central America by providing access to
safe water and sanitation.” (water.org) In Africa, water.org is involved in
Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda. This organization is not involved in
Morocco, but there are a number of other environmental groups active in this
region, including the Environmental Programme Morocco.
Morocco
is having a difficult time keeping its growing level of development in line
with sustainability standards. The main challenge the country is facing is
developing an environmental policy that will aid in the creation of a green
economy. “Selected green economy tools and approaches
are being used in Morocco to achieve objectives and principles of the National
Charter for Environment and Sustainable Development and the national strategy
for providing training in green jobs.” (giz.de) As I had mentioned in a
previous blog post, one of greatest social issues that Morocco is facing is the
fact that many of the country’s young people are unemployed. “Given the high
levels of unemployment among young professionals, the creation of green jobs
also has an increasingly important role to play in environmental and climate
policy.”
As
we read in the snow and ice sustainability article, all actions lead to a
reaction. Many times people don’t think clearly about the consequences of what
they do because it doesn’t affect them or their region directly, and if it
does, it does so in miniscule amounts that seem like nothing. To share this
planet with other people in other cultures is our number one responsibility,
and to do that fully, we have to respect them by holding up our end of the
environmental protection factor. Many groups exist for the purpose of
environmental protection, but, when it comes down to it, it is up to every
individual person and every individual household to do their part in the
protection and conservation of our planet and its resources.
